Downsound Entertainment Faces Backlash After Cutting Vybz Kartel’s Sumfest Performance Stream Short

MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica

Downsound Entertainment is under fire following backlash from fans who tuned in to watch Vybz Kartel’s highly anticipated Reggae Sumfest performance, only to see the live stream abruptly cut after 15 minutes.

During the official YouTube broadcast — which had over 7,000 live viewers — fans were left confused and disappointed when the stream of Kartel’s historic set was suddenly interrupted. For many, this performance marked a powerful moment in dancehall history: the first time Kartel was appearing at Sumfest since regaining freedom.

In response to the outrage, the show's commentary host issued an on-air apology, explaining that an agreement between Vybz Kartel’s record label management and Downsound Entertainment limited the live broadcast to 15 minutes.

“We actually got more than what was originally agreed upon,” the host explained. “We understand the disappointment, and we apologize. This was based on the contractual terms provided by Kartel’s team.”

As of this publication, Vybz Kartel himself has not publicly addressed the matter, nor has his management released an official statement clarifying the terms of the agreement.

The truncated stream has since ignited strong reactions online, particularly from Gaza fans, many of whom felt robbed of witnessing Kartel’s first full-on-stage return since his Freedom Street Concert in December 2024.

Our Opinion

The frustration from fans is understandable. A moment as culturally significant as Vybz Kartel’s return to Reggae Sumfest deserved the full stage — not just physically, but digitally. In an era where streaming connects global audiences, especially the Jamaican diaspora, restricting access dampens the reach and cultural impact. If it was a business decision, transparency should have come before the performance, not after.
